Freeing an Imprisoned Mind

inprisioned-mindI was asked the other day why it’s so hard to get it through our thick skulls that we are God’s children, a foundational truth of victorious living. I recently read a comic that says it all. It contained only one panel with the picture of a chicken sitting on a counselor’s sofa asking, “Although I was born cage-free, occasionally I feel the invisible chains of an imprisoned mind.”
Though we have been set free by Christ, our brains are still in the process of being transformed (Gal. 5:1; Rom. 12:2). We have no clue what the old sin nature did to our brains. We don’t always remember who or what stuff was put into our brains up to this point in our lives. On top of this, we live in a fallen world that is controlled by an enemy who constantly tries to feed us lies. It’s no wonder Paul says in 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, “Though we live in the world we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world … we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
The battle ground for daily freedom is in our minds. The weapons we fight with are truths added to our biblical filters. Don’t be mistaken. You are in a war zone that is all around and within you. But, be encouraged today my friend. Paul would also say, “Thanks be to God! He gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The source of victory, Jesus, also is within you. This is indeed good news. Therefore, stay in His Word daily. Listen to the Spirit as He exposes the lies that imprison your mind. Increase your trust in those truths by adding them to your filter. Then walk with Jesus throughout your day using those truths. As you do, the prison doors of your mind will swing wide open for you to walk in freedom.
