Freedom in the hands of another is not freedom.
Think about that for a second. How often have you handled a situation using your drug of choice because of what someone else said and did or didn’t say or do? I’ll guess the percentage is pretty high.
Therein lies the challenge. You’ve given your freedom to a human being! You might be saying, “Duh, who else is there?” Jesus. Human beings can and will fail to meet our needs for love, security and significance. Jesus never will.
The sooner you realize that when you place your freedom in the hands of anyone but Jesus, you’ve opened the door for your drug of choice to enter. True freedom comes by believing who and Whose you are while using your biblical tools everyday everywhere.
Freedom. Whose hands are you putting yours in?

The Choice is Now Yours
“Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life and offer the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness.” This quote from Romans 6:13 is revolutionary in two ways.
First, before becoming God’s child, all you could do is go from one drug of choice to another, never truly experiencing life as God planned it. Yeah, you might look good on the outside, but you could never be free from the inside, true freedom.
Second, now you can. For the first time in your life, you can now choose your daily destiny – freedom or slavery, victor or victim. Because of what Jesus did for and in you, you can choose to live in freedom experiencing lasting love, security and significance.
Yeah, bad stuff may have happened to you in the past. Yes, you may be experiencing the consequences of your own bad decisions. But…today is today. With the Spirit’s power you can you choose correctly in every situation you encounter because you’re a child of God. The choice is now yours. Hopefully you will choose to use your biblical tools to stay in the presence of God and enjoy the good stuff only He can deliver.

Authenticity Not Showmanship
I read the following from the self-described “wizard of ads.” He said, “People value information, entertainment, and hope. If you give them these from an open hand and an open heart, they will probably forgive your unattractive, outdated and clunky method of delivery.”
We live in a time where so much data is thrown at us in a very polished and professional format. People can hardly catch up with it all, let alone decipher whether it’s true or not.
What we all want to know is this, “Does it work? Will it make my life better?” You don’t have to be a slick salesperson for Jesus. Let Jesus change your life using your biblical tools and then let people see the change for themselves. What Jesus has done in your life will bring hope and the information they need on how Jesus can work for them as well.
Authenticity, not showmanship, is what people are looking for in believers today. You don’t have to have a bells and whistles testimony that says, “Look at me!” No, be the person Jesus created and is creating you to be – an awesome child of God! Let Him shine through you. And you will make a huge impact on the lives around you.

No More Duh Moments
I find it interesting that people make up and/or repeat blonde jokes. If believers stop and thought about it, however, people would be making “duh” type jokes about us.
Ephesians 2:4-6, “But God…raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” Right now, this very second, we are seated in Jesus’ lap in the very presence of God! We are in the place where all the good stuff in life – love, joy, peace, significance, security, etc. – is found. Why do we choose to crawl out of His lap and play on the floor? Duh!
Galatians 5:1, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do no submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Right now, this very second, we are free from our drugs of choice. Why do we give up the good stuff of freedom for the enslavement of our drugs of choice? Duh!
Today, leave those duh moments behind and choose to be who Jesus created you to be and do what do with Him.

Know When to Walk Away
I said, “What a bummer!” as I was looking out on waves I could never ride. You see, I don’t get much surf time as the Lord has me living over an hour from the beach. So here I am on vacation within a very short walking distance of the beach looking at some great waves to ride … for someone else.
I’m relegated to surfing smaller waves on a longboard due to my lack of surf time and arthritis in one shoulder. What I was looking at was far from my surfing enjoyment conditions. Yeah, I could have gone out anyways. I’d only have gotten extremely exhausted from the paddle out and been greatly frustrated over not being able to ride any waves if I had. Why put myself through it?
This is part of what Jesus meant when He told us “to watch and pray so that you won’t enter temptation.” Why put yourself into situations that make it hard to listen to and follow Jesus and easier to take your drug of choice?
We must have long memories of both our defeats and our victories. We have to know when to both walk away to and walk forward freedom. Sometimes it’s simply not worth getting the water.
