Faster and Farther

silhouettes of people on mountainsI recently experienced the adage, “You can travel faster alone, but farther with others.” Yet, I traveled both faster and farther this time. I had to travel to the airport, which without traffic would have taken an hour and 37 minutes to be on time for my flight.
My departure time, though, put me in the middle of traffic. Now it was going to take 2 hours and 47 minutes to be at the airport on time…if I traveled alone. My beautiful wife and best friend got up extra early to travel with me. This meant carpool lanes all the way, which cut 47 minutes off our drive. Yes!
This illustrates James 5:16. As we walk with at least one believer with whom we confess to and pray for each other to listen better and follow closer to Jesus, we’ll see our lives changed much more rapidly than on our own. I not only have an awesome woman praying for me, but quite a few brothers as well.
Who are you being transparent with and praying for today? Whatever your challenges to this truth are, it’s worth overcoming them in the power of the Spirit. I’m much farther down the road in the Spirit replacing me with Jesus much faster because I choose by faith to chose to do so. I know you will as well.

Slimed

slimmedEver felt slimed? I have. It usually happens when I turn my back on Jesus and do my own thing. My flesh, the old sin stained thinking patterns, leads me to believe that I’ll feel good by handling life my way. The moment I take a step in my direction, I start to lose the very thing I was heading in that direction to get – peace, security and love. I call this yucky feeling being slimed.
You don’t have to like the slime, but you can certainly use it to your advantage. Don’t give up or continue to give in, just turn around! This is called repentance. We were not meant to live in the slim, just as this sea otter was not meant to be slimed by oil. When slimed, we have a Savior who will clean us up simply by asking Him to forgive us.
Do you deserve to feel good again? No, but that’s part of what living in His grace means. When you start to feel that slime feeling coming on, choose to turn around, ask forgiveness and enjoy the closeness with Jesus and all that comes with it.

On The Job When You’re Not

behind scenes “When I can’t see You, I know You’re here; When I can’t feel You, I will not fear; I will trust in You, and I will not be afraid.” These lyrics remind me of a truth I’m currently entertaining: God is working behind the scenes even though I can’t see it.
I recently finished a book on Esther that brought some insights into the scriptural story. The Persian King had seven noble advisors; and then, literally out of nowhere, comes a guy named Haman who wants to destroy the entire Jewish race.
God sees tomorrow and acts today. Long before Haman entered the picture, He saw Satan’s attempt to keep Jesus from being born. So what does He do? Nine years earlier He uses a drunken king to depose a queen, who four years later elevates a young Jewish girl to replace her, whom God used to defeat Israel’s adversary.
We can’t always see or understand what God is doing, but rest in this truth: No matter what’s currently happening in your life or world, God is working “all things together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” He’s always on the job, even when you’re not.

Savior not Killjoy

comicBoth sides of the the Book call God Savior (Ps. 43:5; 2 Pet. 1:1). This means God can repair damaged people as well as can keep them from being damaged. Part of the way He does this is to show us how to live each day.
Like the comic depicts, His Word is not meant to hem us in, but to keep us safe. His commands are not meant to kill our joy, but to enhance it. He knows the consequences we’ll face, some harsher than others, if we go through those guardrails.
Hopefully you’ll be in and with the Word today to hear Jesus give you the guardrails you’ll need to enjoy the life He came to give you. Jesus knows all about you, inside and out, and still says, “I love you.” So let Him save you today, especially from yourself.

Surrender Isn’t Easy Only Best

surrenderTozer once said, “The essence of surrender is getting out of God’s way so that He can do in us what He also wants to do through us.”
An ancient Jewish saying puts it like this, “It’s better to be like God than to commune with God.” We think doing Christian or even godly things makes us cool with Jesus. Nope. It doesn’t work that way.
Now is the time to ask, “Spirit, how am I getting in the way? Jesus give me the courage to see what I need to see and Spirit give me the power to give it up.”
